It was always intended to be a humourous account of what could potentially have been a very dangerous situation. It was never intended to be a slight against the old man...simply a warning to all photographers to be careful when shooting properties.

The details:

We were passing through Glocester, Rhode Island when I spotted a really great-looking abandoned house and shed in the woods by the side of the road. We turned around and went back, where I hopped out to get some shots. The house sat in a low spot, and west of the house was a hill with a newer house sitting on top of it.

I took several shots and loked around a bit, and just as I was taking the last shot that I wanted, this crazed old man came running over the hill at me. He was screaming, "Give me that F---n camera! I'm going to smash the F---n thing!"

I turned on my heel and headed for the car. I opened the door, and just as I sat in the passenger seat and tried to close the door, the old man hit the outside of the door, pinning my leg against the running board of the car. Then he started smashing my leg with the door over and over.

I pushed the door open against him in an effort to knock him back so I could pull my leg in and close the door, but he regained his balance and came back at me again. He grabbed the door and started banging it against my leg, so I pushed it open again, and this time I followed it and hopped out of the car. The look on his face was priceless when he realised that I was fully intent on fighting back to defend myself.

I came out swinging and slapped the old fart silly. I didn't want to ball up my fist and punch him, as I didn't want to seriously injure him, so I just hit him with some really good slaps, as I simply wanted him to quit hitting me!

Meanwhile, my hubby was sitting in the driver's seat of our car and hadn't moved. After the old man finally gave up hitting me, then my husband got out of the car and came around to my side with his hands clasped behind his back. He said to the old guy, "You don't hit women. Have you had enough, or do you want me to sic her on you again?"

While all of this was happening, a woman had stopped to call 9-1-1 to get assistance for me. When the first officer arrived, he asked what happened, then went and put the old man into the backseat of his cruiser and arrested him.

Then the second officer arrived and the first officer came to join him. I told them the full story and they just kept shaking their heads. Neither of them could believe what had taken place over me snapping a few shots of a long-forgotten house.

By the time I finished recounting the entire story to them, they were both in hysterics. One of them asked me if I had at least gotten a few good licks of my own in. I told them, "Yes. I think the old guy got the worst end of the fight." That statement sent them into fits of laughter again. They were surprised that a little old woman was able to defend herself against larger and stronger man who was on the attack.
